PC software localisation

Our translation agency has been dealing with the software localisation of various Windows programmes since our foundation in 1995. Thanks to acquaintances at the CEBIT trade fair, our office in Wuppertal worked closely with the first PC specialists in Russia who translated the first DOS and Windows operating systems into Russian.

The current head of the office, Mr Alexandre Nefedov, personally translated such programmes from English into Russian as Symantec software (Norton Commander, etc.) back in the 1990s, as well as working on Intel and Microsoft documentation, first as an employee, later as an independent entrepreneur.

Russian, like German, Chinese or Spanish, is one of the languages with fixed standards for computer terminology. Since official Microsoft glossaries have become publicly available to everyone, translating standard software into Russian has also become an easy task.

The special feature of our software translation is that we rarely translate general and widespread programmes for the mass market, but localise specialised software for our clients. Such as software for battery dealers or PC programmes for construction companies and architects who plan their projects on the computer first.

Software for software translation

The days of using home-made programs to translate software strings are over. Components of modern PC software can be easily translated with CAT tools. At Rusdoc, we usually use our favourite tool SDL Trados for this.

It is a well-known fact that most programmes in the world are created in the English language, which is why the number of translation projects from English is also significantly higher in our translation agency than from German. We also receive the latest projects from China in English as the source language. Of course, we are just as happy to translate from German into Russian.

As far as software localisation for the mass market is concerned, we can name among the largest recent projects the translation into Russian of the well-known communication programme VooV Meeting by the Chinese company Tencent.
