For a long time Rusdoc and its boss neglected the translation of apps for iOS and Android. Much more extensive localisation of industrial software for machines and systems were more important to us and kept us busy without breaks for a long 27 years since 1995. Only now and then we had carried out smaller jobs, sometimes even for free, for example to support a young programmer with his start-up.

It is not only about de things that can be different, of course, such as units of measurement (centimetres, inches, grams, pounds), dates (order day, month, year or vice versa), time (12-hour or 24-hour format), telephone number formats (country and city codes), temperatures (Celsius or Fahrenheit), currencies (euros, dollars, pounds, francs) or clothing sizes, but about local peculiarities that only locals know.

Unfortunately, Russian mobile phone owners often have to see on their gadgets that the Russian translation of some apps simply comes from a free internet translator. Even the best apps lose their value because no machine translation is as good as from a real translator. Sometimes such a translation is funny, but sometimes it is misleading. Although the translation of an app often costs only a few euros, some developers also save these costs. As a result, even the best apps lose their real good earned value.

In any case, we use our CAT tools such as SDL Trados or Across to reduce costs for the client and to make it easier for the translator to comply with the terminology.

Prices for software localisation can differ from prices for "normal" translation. The translation of individual words takes considerably more time than the translation of continuous text. We therefore ask our customers to find out about this before placing an order.
